Herbs on a north-facing balcony

September 2026

My balcony gets maybe two hours of direct sun in summer and none at all from October. This year I tried five herbs in the same soil mix and the same watering routine.

Mint took over its pot by June. It does not care about light at all. Keep it in its own container, otherwise it will strangle everything next to it.

Chives and parsley grew slower than on the packet but steadily. Cutting them often helped more than any fertiliser.

Thyme survived but stayed small and woody. Basil gave up in three weeks. Next year basil goes on the kitchen windowsill instead.

Watering: once the top two centimetres are dry, not on a schedule. In a shady spot the soil stays wet much longer than you'd expect.
